Story

Beginning

How did Brulo start?

A beer worth opening on a Tuesday.

James Brown spent years putting craft beer through Britain's letterboxes with Beer52. In 2019 he started Brulo because he wanted one he could open on a weeknight without writing off the next morning. Most alcohol-free beer back then drank like an apology. Brulo launched in Edinburgh to prove the category could be loud and worth choosing on its own terms.

How is Brulo alcohol-free?

Brewed from scratch, never stripped.

Most alcohol-free beer is brewed normally and then has the alcohol pulled back out, which tends to drag the flavour with it. Brulo goes the other way. Every can is brewed from scratch with water, malted barley, hops and yeast, using cultures chosen to stop short of alcohol while keeping the hop character intact. Brewing happens at the De Proefbrouwerij in Belgium, a contract house trusted by several of the category's best.

The eye

What is with the eye?

Clarity, staring back.

Every Brulo can carries a single open eye. It is drawn from 1960s Japanese art and stands for clarity and presence, the idea of being fully there for the evening rather than fuzzily half in it. It has become the thing people recognise first, before they have read a word of the label.

FAQs

Is Brulo really alcohol-free?

Yes. Lust for Life is a true 0.0%. The rest of the range sits at 0.5%, low enough it won't touch your evening.

How does it taste like real beer?

Because it is built like one. The full range uses the same four ingredients as regular beer and is brewed from scratch, with no alcohol removed afterwards, which keeps the body and hop aroma that stripped beers tend to lose.

Is Brulo vegan?

Almost all of it. Four of the five beers here are vegan and all-natural. The Five Fruit Gose is the one to check if that matters to you.

Which Brulo should I start with?

Lust for Life, the 0.0% flagship that started the range. Double dry-hopped with Citra, Simcoe and Mosaic for mango, peach and pine.
