Story

Beginning

How did Vandestreek start?

Two brothers, one beer day a week.

Ronald and Sander van de Streek started brewing at home in a Utrecht flat in 2010, with no plan to go pro. They told their bosses they were taking Fridays off, called it beer day, crowdfunded their first commercial batch in 2013, then built their own brewery in 2017. The name means "from the area," and the Utrecht taproom is now a local fixture.

How is it alcohol-free?

A real brewery that nails 0.5%.

Most of the range comes out of a brewery the brothers designed and built themselves, not a contract line. Playground uses a unique yeast that barely turns sugar into alcohol, with special malts for body and American hops, Columbus, Mosaic, Citra and Cascade, for flavour, so nothing is removed, only added. They lean sustainable too: nitrogen recycled from the air, less water, recyclable cans, and a Skal-certified organic core range.

What is with the names?

The whole place is a playground.

Playground, Funhouse, Bumper. The alcohol-free range is named like a fairground because the brewery is, in the brothers' words, a playground where they experiment every day. Playground began as a one-off special, became the Netherlands' first alcohol-free IPA in 2017, and grew into the most-awarded alcohol-free IPA in the world.

How does it taste like real beer?

It is brewed in a full working brewery, with a special yeast that barely converts sugar to alcohol and a load of American hops. Nothing is stripped out afterwards.
